Some like it real

January 14, 2005 - I realize that all video games give the AI an advantage over the player. Whether it be knowledge of the race track layout or an army of bad guys trying to kill little ole' you, the odds are usually always on the AI. The problem with World Championship Poker is that the AI is given a distinct advantage. In fact, in any real poker game, it would be called cheating.
I only played Texas Hold 'Em in offline mode, because that's all I play in real life. I have Howard Lederer's instructional DVD, several books, and I regularly play on Yahoo! Games. I'm not a novice to the game by any means, but Crave seems to be. I don't think ANYONE at the company bothered to watch Lederer's DVD or read a single book.
I am consistently given 5/3 offsuit. By consistently I mean it is the first hand I am dealt after I sit down at any table. This is annoying in itself, but what provokes me to claim the AI has an advantage is their ability to act on my cards. Most notably, I had three aces, one in the pocket, and two on the board. What did my opponent have? Pocket twos. He played pocket two's against a pair of aces on the board!? Yes, in fact, he called when I went all in! We get to the river, I have him beat, he has only two outs and what happens? The river is a 2. Full house beats Three aces. Ok, it could happen, everyone gets lucky.
Flash-forward to a later hand, I'm holding pocket kings. (A top pair and killer hand, for those of you that don't know.) My opponent has 4/7 offsuit. The flop comes: 6,3,5. Ok, maybe I just have bad luck. Next time I have pocket kings, I am beaten by a flush to the 6. Time after that, straight to the 10. I've only had pocket kings three times, and each time they've lost to a flush or straight. I must have the worst luck in the world.
The AI will check down a monster hand, but they'll call all-in with a pair of twos when I'm the chip leader and the board shows aces!? Either these people have never played poker or they know something that I don't. Maybe they just felt lucky, but calling a four hundred dollar bet with 4/7 offsuit? That's a little strange to me.
The simple point here is that you can't give an advantage to the AI in a card game. If the AI is stupid (which it is) you need to go back and retool it, don't just give it information it shouldn't have! (IE: My cards, and what the flop will be.) I didn't buy this game, but I'm angry over the seven dollars it cost me to rent it. The single player gameplay is absolutely useless, and you can play Limit Hold 'Em online at Yahoo! Games for free. So why would ANYONE buy this game? Exactly, they won't. Well, they might, but only if they're as dumb as the AI.
To sum it up: I absolutely loathe this title.
