Poker parties

Ehy, is it hold'em or fold'em???

Grand Strand bar owner Don Emry was bitten by the poker bug roughly two years ago, and recently competed in a Poker Tour International tournament in Costa Rica.

Emry, who owns biker-friendly bars The Dog House and Steel Horse Saloon along with gay club The Rainbow House, considers himself a mid-level player. "It feeds the competitive need for the average guy," he said. "But poker knows no gender and it knows no age."

He sharpens his skills by playing poker regularly aboard local casino cruise boats and online at sites such as www.partypoker.com.

Emry offers the following tips for beginning poker players:

"Educate yourself. Make sure you understand how the game is played, the strategies of the game, and the strengths of the hands before you commit any money/chips to playing. Read a book to understand the basic strategies of the game."

"Pay attention to the table. Watch to see how each player plays. Some are very loose, some are very aggressive, some are passive, and some are conservative. Use this information when you are making decisions on how to play your hand."

"Do NOT overvalue face cards or aces. Many beginning players make the mistake of calling a hand just because they have an ace or a king in their hand. The second card in your hand is just as important as the primary card in your hand."

"Be patient. You want to be a poker player not a gambler. Don't call a bet just because you are looking for that miracle card to win the pot. This will cost you in the long run. If your hand does not match the flop, fold it."

"Be aware of your betting position. Play fewer hands when you are first to bet, and be more aggressive when you are last."

"Be aggressive when you have a strong hand. You want to be the person betting, not the person calling. Don't let other players chase straights and flushes cheaply, and when the straight or flush is on the board, back off."

"If you want to learn the game, I recommend www.partypoker.com. This is the largest and most secure online site. You can play for free with phony money until you are ready to play for cash."
